Protecting the Rights of Patients Detained under the Mental Health Act

Meetings
Webinar
Tuesday 12th April, 2022 - 11:00 to 12:30

About this event

Connect with the CQC Mental Health Act reviewers’ pilot project and feed in experiences you have identified about detained patients.

We’re hosting this meeting across the central region to:

  • allow you to hear how this CQC team is looking at how better networking with organisations like Healthwatch strengthens protecting patients;
  • make sure you’ve got a clear route into the team if you hear from patients or families of those detained;
  • hear about what you pick up through your work.

Who is this event for?

All local Healthwatch staff in the central region, particularly those who have heard from people who have an interest in mental health. We want to suggest that, if possible, one person from each Healthwatch attends. This could be any one of your team who’s got a particular interest in mental health service users’ experience.

What will you learn?

Jo and Lindani work in the Mental Health Hospitals Directorate of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regionally and nationally on the Mental Health Act (MHA) operations team. The national team are responsible for dispensing CQC powers to monitor the use of the MHA.

The purpose of MHA monitoring activity is to provide an independent specialist review of how the MHA is being applied. Identifying improvements needed, now or in the future, to protect patients, promote their rights and increase the quality of their care and treatment.

As you’ll probably know, MHA reviewers visit wards where patients are detained in hospital or on community treatment orders and meet with them in private to find out about their experiences. They review the ward environment, look at patient records and speak with staff, advocates and carers.

CQC is running a six-month pilot in the North and Central regions, looking at improving collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to improve our regional understanding of patient and carer experiences. We would like to meet with you to hear any information about the experiences of detained patients in your area and better understand the work you carry out.
