Get involved in dementia action week

People with dementia, and their loved ones, commonly tell us that their experience of services could have been better if doctors, nurses and care staff had been more dementia aware. Can you help?

It’s Dementia Action Week this May and, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, we thought we could make a difference to this issue by hosting events which health and care staff could attend to become dementia friends.

What's involved?

The aim would be to hold events between Monday 20 – Sunday 26 May 2019.

What do you need to do?

Local Healthwatch will need to host an event and invite professionals along from local services. In return, the Alzheimer’s Society would provide someone train your attendees to become dementia friends. Alternatively, you could become a dementia champion and run the training yourself.

Are you interested?

Before we start work on this proposal, we need to know how many of you would be interested in taking part. So if you are interested, please email benedict.knox@healthwatch.co.uk expressing your interest.

More about Dementia

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer with someone developing it every three minutes. There is currently no cure and is the biggest challenge of the health and social care sector.

Alzheimer’s Society is leading on raising awareness and creating social action through their Dementia Friends programme. Becoming a Dementia Friend simply means learning our 5 key messages and finding out more about how dementia affects a person. Then armed with this understanding, committing to an action and doing small everyday things that help. Every action counts, no matter how small – from being more patient in the supermarket, sharing on Social media, through to volunteering or helping build a dementia-friendly service.
