About this event

There are approximately 14 million disabled people in the UK. This workshop will help you gain awareness about disability and how disability can impact the health outcomes and experiences of people accessing health and social care services. This awareness is an important part of supporting the communities we serve. 

There will be particular focus on mental health awareness and engaging with people living with mental health conditions. 

You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss how this relates to your own work.

Interactive workshop with participation and discussion.  We appreciate you keeping your camera on and joining in when possible. 

Who is this event for?

Anyone in Healthwatch who is interested in tackling health inequalities and disability awareness. This is an entry level session.   

What you will learn?

In our session, we will cover: 

• The social vs medical model of disability 

• Common types of disabilities and day-to-day barriers and challenges for people in the UK 

• Disability inclusive approaches to community engagement in a healthcare setting 

• Common mistakes and challenges organisations face when engaging with people with disabilities 

• Best approaches for championing the voices of disabled people and those with mental health conditions 

• Different mental health conditions and how they can impact different people 

• Engaging with service users with mental health conditions
