About this event

This interactive training session will be co-delivered with community members and offer practical advice on improving local services and making them more accessible for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.

Content of the training session will include:

An overview of the rich and diverse histories and cultures of the different Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, including a summary of each group.

Discuss the statistics Friends, Family and Travellers have gathered around education, hate crime and discrimination, and accommodation to give an overview of the different areas where Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people experience inequalities.

Explore the health inequalities and barriers that Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people face when trying to access healthcare.

Share your learning: The session will provide opportunities to share insight with colleagues. We will also explore the barriers and brainstorm what positive change can be implemented to improve access.

Explore practical solutions, what to be aware of during a consultation and how to improve practices and work to make places more accessible for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.

Additional resources will be made available after the session for attendees to refer to for future needs.

Type of event

This event is an online training session and will be delivered using Zoom technology. The training will be interactive and provide opportunities to share your insights.

We ask that registered delegates test their technology before the session to ensure the best possible experience. Please let us know asap if you would like support.

Who is this event for?

This bespoke training session has been designed for local Healthwatch colleagues in all roles. It would be particularly useful to colleagues in roles working with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities or are planning to do so in the future.

What will you learn?

Gypsies, Roma, and Travellers are one of the largest minority ethnic communities yet have some of the worst health outcomes of any ethnic group. This workshop will provide an opportunity to share insight, hear reflections of lived experience and to better understand the health inequalities faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.

We will also look at what local services can do to be more inclusive.

Who is running this event?

The course will be delivered by Friends, Family and Travellers and The Roma Support Group, two national charities with expertise in supporting people in these communities.
